Hyperscale Sells $43.4M in Bitcoin to Clear DeFi Debt, Still Faces 12-Month Cash Shortfall
Hyperscale Data sold 686 BTC for $43.4 million to eliminate its Bitcoin-backed loans on the Morpho protocol. However, the company has issued a going-concern warning, stating its current liquidity is insufficient to fund operations and capital projects for the next year.

According to a recent quarterly filing, Hyperscale Data liquidated approximately 686 Bitcoin in August 2026, generating proceeds of roughly $43.4 million. The company then directed a portion of these funds to completely pay off its Bitcoin-backed loans on Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol.
By settling its debt, Hyperscale freed up its pledged collateral and now has no remaining borrowings on the Morpho platform, thereby removing a pressing, loan-related collateral exposure. While this move alleviates one area of financial pressure, it does not solve a more significant issue highlighted by the company. Hyperscale has stated that its available liquidity is not expected to be enough to meet its operational needs, existing obligations, and planned capital spending over the next 12 months, casting doubt on its viability as a going concern.
The company's financial state at the end of the quarter on June 30 showed approximately $16 million in loans from Morpho, which were secured by cbBTC with a carrying value of around $25.4 million. Following the end of the quarter, Hyperscale took on more debt, receiving an additional $31.6 million in aggregate net proceeds from further Bitcoin-backed borrowing via Morpho. Subsequently, in August 2026, the company sold the 686 Bitcoin. The filing specifies that a part of the resulting $43.4 million was used to fully repay all its Morpho loan balances.
This full repayment marks a significant development since an earlier sale of 150.5 Bitcoin on August 6. The quarterly filing clarifies the sequence of events: Hyperscale secured the additional loans after June 30 and then proceeded to completely clear its DeFi debt later in August.
As of the June 30 cutoff, Hyperscale's balance sheet showed $36.8 million in cash and cash equivalents, contrasted with $201.7 million in current liabilities. The company's performance in the first half of 2026 resulted in a consolidated net loss of $49.1 million, with operating activities consuming $9.9 million in cash.
Looking ahead, company management anticipates that the planned 20-megawatt deployment at its AI data center in Michigan will necessitate an investment exceeding $100 million over time. The project's schedule and total cost are contingent on the company's ability to secure financing. Therefore, while paying off the Morpho loans has resolved a near-term collateral obligation, it has not addressed the fundamental challenge of funding this major construction project.
In summary, although Hyperscale has successfully neutralized its exposure to the Morpho lending protocol, it faces the critical task of raising or generating sufficient capital. This funding is essential for the company to fulfill its existing obligations, finish the Michigan data center, and navigate its operations while under a formal going-concern warning.
