Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin ETF Attracts $371M in New Shares Despite Asset Value Drop from BTC Price Decline
The Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) saw robust investor interest, attracting $371.1 million in share contributions during its first 85 days, though its net asset value fell by $66.8 million, primarily due to Bitcoin's price depreciation. Redemptions remained minimal compared to the substantial inflows, and the fund continued to grow its shares outstanding after the reporting period.

Despite a downturn in Bitcoin's price, the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) demonstrated strong investor demand in its initial operating period, according to its first quarterly filing.
Financial Performance and Market Impact
During its first 85 days, from April 7 to June 30, the exchange-traded fund brought in $371.1 million in gross share contributions. This inflow significantly overshadowed the $5.26 million processed as redemption distributions. However, the trust simultaneously recorded a $66.8 million decrease in net assets derived from its operations.
The primary driver of this operational decrease was a $66.17 million unrealized depreciation in the value of its Bitcoin holdings, which constituted nearly 99% of the decline. The remainder of the $66.86 million accounting result was composed of $618,611 in realized Bitcoin losses and $72,288 in sponsor fees. It is important to distinguish this accounting figure from a measure of ETF outflows.
Reflecting the market trend, the net asset value per share for MSBT decreased by 14.01%, falling from $19.70 to $16.94. This performance was closely aligned with its disclosed benchmark, the CoinDesk Bitcoin index, which saw a 13.98% decline over the identical timeframe.
As of the quarter's end, the trust's holdings amounted to 5,059.3077 BTC. This position had a cost basis of $365.18 million but a fair value of $299 million, calculated using a Bitcoin price of $59,101.49.
Share Activity and Fund Mechanics
The filing shows that creations of new shares vastly outpaced redemptions. Redemption distributions accounted for just 1.42% of the gross contributions made during the period. Specifically, MSBT issued 17.9 million new shares, equivalent to 1,790 creation baskets, while redeeming only 250,000 shares, or 25 redemption baskets.
Through these capital transactions, the fund added a net total of $365.84 million. It concluded the month of June with 17.65 million shares outstanding.
The composition of the $371.1 million in contributions was detailed as $200.3 million in cash proceeds combined with $170.8 million worth of Bitcoin received in exchange for share issuance. The filing's GAAP figures and the daily ETF flow tables are based on different measurement methods.
According to the fund’s prospectus, creations and redemptions at the trust level are conducted by Authorized Participants, who transact in 10,000-share baskets at net asset value. In contrast, ordinary investors typically buy and sell MSBT shares on the NYSE Arca exchange.
Investor Trends and Post-Period Growth
For its entire first month of trading, MSBT experienced no daily redemptions. That streak was broken by the subsequent 25 redemption baskets, though their value remained small in comparison to the gross creations. Because these basket transactions do not identify the ultimate sellers or their motivations, the filing is unable to confirm whether retail investor activity was the cause of the redemptions.
The fund's growth trend extended beyond the reporting period. By July 31, the number of shares outstanding had risen to 21.74 million. This represents an increase of 4.09 million shares, or 23.17%, from the June 30 total, confirming that net creation activity persisted. The filing does not specify which investors or distribution channels were responsible for this continued growth.
